BlackSky has successfully commissioned its fourth Gen-3 satellite in less than one week following launch, opening general availability of our next-generation constellation capabilities to customers worldwide. With four Gen-3 satellites now on orbit, customers can directly task daytime, twilight and nighttime collections, accessing best-in-class 35 cm imagery and AI-enabled analytics through the BlackSky Spectra® platform. Speed matters. Rapidly bringing new satellites online helps organizations monitor activity, respond to emerging events and compress the decision cycle. The image below, captured on 9 March 2026 at 9:44 A.M. over Gqeberha, South Africa by the newest Gen-3 satellite, shows the type of clarity available across the constellation. BlackSky was awarded a contract modification from the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) to accelerate development of our AROS broad area collection satellites as a critical commercial alternative to current suppliers for foundation imagery. The effort funds a direct path toward a flight ready multi-spectral, large-area mapping spacecraft and foundation data collection system in 2028. “Developing BlackSky’s AROS constellation in partnership with the U.S. government cements a major step in securing U.S. global space competitiveness, resilience and maintaining critical operational continuity as commercially available foundation data becomes capacity-constrained in the coming years,” said Brian O’Toole, BlackSky CEO. “BlackSky will design, develop and field the next generation of high-performance, AI-ready geospatial foundation data satellites, leveraging the proven heritage and reliability of our advanced Gen-3 architecture and vertically integrated agile manufacturing infrastructure.” These new satellites will be designed to support dynamic country-scale digital mapping, navigation, maritime situational awareness and 3D digital twin applications. DubaiAirshowF35s
During an aerial demonstration on 18 November at the Dubai Airshow, Gen-3 collected a high-resolution image of a formation of L-15 jets in action—and our AI-powered analytics detected each aircraft in the scene. This is the power of real-time, space-based intelligence: enabling faster insight, greater situational awareness and mission-ready analytics.
BlackSky’s third Gen-3 satellite entered commercial operations in just three weeks following launch, reflecting an exponential increase in commissioning speed since the launch of our first Gen-3 unit. “Integrating our latest Gen-3 satellite into the BlackSky Spectra platform in just 21 days following launch is proof positive that our first-of-its-kind end-to-end architecture is delivering incredible operational value to our customers at disruptive speed, scale and economics,” said Brian OToole, BlackSky CEO. “Achieving effective market penetration and expansion with Gen-3 is the direct result of meeting customer commitments and delivering exceptional mission-relevant value through a disciplined ’land and expand’ approach.” Our customers now have access to all three current Gen-3 satellites through the Spectra tasking and analytics platform with the ability to collect time-diverse, high-cadence day and nighttime imagery, including high off-nadir collections, with automated AI-enabled vessel, aircraft and vehicle detection and identification analytics.
